August 31 Update

Kristen was discharged from the hospital this weekend. She is at home and resting. She will continue a regimen of physical therapy. She is not quite ready for visitors but will be getting a new cell phone soon to keep in touch.

August 27th Update

Kristen is kicking ass in rehab. The hospital is considering discharging her. Her parents are working a visitation s schedule and system. We will keep you updated.

Thanks for the cards that have been sent to the address given earlier in the blog. They will be given to Kristen tonight.

Monday August 24th Update

Kristen is doing absolutely amazing. She is progressing faster than the hospital imagined and was allowed to have non-hospital food last night. Her dream dinner was ravioli and minestrone soup from the Olive Garden. Visitations are very limited due to the risk of infection for all the patients in that area. She is in great spirits and has a good sense of humor.

Aug 22 Update

We hung out with Kristen for a couple of hours last night. She is in ggod spirits. She is progressing with her rehab. She told that all she wants right now is to go home and sleep in her bed (and a visit to the Starbucks in the hospital lobby).


The hospital allowed the firefighters from Engine 1 to visit her last night. They were the first EMT's to arrive at her accident scene. They had a good chat with her and gave her a SLCFD shirt.

August 21 Update

Kristen is resting and gaining strength. She is beginning her rehab and she is looking forward to getting out of the hospital sometime soon.

August 20 Update

Just resting peacefully in the hospital today.

August 19 Update

We had a chat with an old friend today. Kristen is able to talk now. She says thank you for all the wishes and prayers. She has a long road ahead of here but it was awesome to see her smile and to hear her voice.

Augusrt 18 Update

Kristen is on the long raod to recovery. She is resting comfortably and watching lots of TV. We brought her a video player last night so that she can have a little more variety.

August 16 Update

Kristen is resting peacefully and is gaining more strength. Pretty much the same as the last two days.

We were contacted by someone who stated they were told Kristen could have visitors. Unfortunately this is not true yet. We will let every one know when it is possible to visit her.

We met the firefighters that responded to the accident scene today. Engine 1 just happened to be around the block when the accident happened and they were joined by Rescue Engine 7 within minutes. They had Kristen delivered to the hospital within 15 minutes of the accident. Their professionalism and dedicated enabled Kristen to have a fighting chance. God bless them.

August 14 Update

Kristen is breathing on her own and is ready to start a long rehabilitation. Everyone is grateful to the wonderful nursing staff at the U of U. They are truly remarkable. Kristen has used a lot of blood products during her hospital stay. Summer is the worst season for blood donations and the supplies run low. I will post directions for donating blood to the U of U hospital. If possible we would like to at least replace what Kristen had to use. More details tomorrow.

August 10 Update

Great news to report. Kristen is awake at times and coherent. She is able to answer questions by nodding her head (there is a tube in her throat that does not allow her to speak). She is still medicated and is looking at more hurdles but we are very excited to see her interact. I told her that there must be something to this girl power stuff (an inside joke related to a bumper sticker) because she is way tougher than me. I received a very strong yes head nod.
She was flipping thru TV channels using the newly acquired remote when we left.

Thank you for all the thoughts, prayers and good wishes Kristen has received.

8/9 Update

Kristen is starting to be more active. They are cutting down her medication and she is moving around a lot more.

August 8 Update

Kristen was tested last night and she was able to move her arms and legs. The hospital is on a vigilant watch for blood clots. She is still heavily medicated.

August 7 Update

Kristen is resting comfortably in her room. It appears the surgeries are done and that she can focus on getting better. She is still in an induced coma.

8/6 afternoon update

Kristen had her broken jaw worked on today. All went well and she is resting comfortably.

8/6 Update

Kristen's leg surgery went well and she was stable after the surgery. She is scheduled to have another surgery today to repair her broken jaw. This should the final surgery and she will be able to just rest and heal.

Update 8/5

Kristen's leg surgery is going on right now. She was canceled yesterday because of emergency patients with more pressing needs. Will update later.

Update 8/4

Kristen has come down with a minor case of pneumonia. The medicine is working breaking up the junk. She is currently in surgery to have her broken leg fixed. Surgery is scheduled for Thursday to fix her broken jaw. I will give an update when she gets out of surgery.

8/2 and 8/3 Update

Sorry I missed yesterday but I sat with Kristen until midnite. Pretty much the same as the previous three days. She is in a medically induced coma but is quite peaceful. THank you for all the good wishes and prayers. Every hour is a win for Kristen and we are hopeful that she will pull out of this.

Update 8/1/09

There are a few good steps to report. The nurses reported that they feel that Kristen has seen the worst of the swelling and that some areas have actually started to subside. That also told us last night that she has started the healing process. She is still in an induced coma but her appearance seems to be more restful and calm. These are just baby steps in a marathon but it is nice to have some upbeat news.


The family would like to note the great efforts of the Salt Lake City paramedics. The rescue unit from Station 1 was only about a block away from 300West 300 South when the bus hit Kristen. They were on the scene immediately and were able to stabilize her and get her to the trauma center quickly.
